I rarely paint anything with a political context - but the painting, pictured here of one of our great-grandchildren, was in progress this week
I painted the full portrait, but left the background empty. I liked it that way, but wondered how a flag might be a nice backdrop, given that her dress had stars on it.
Then came another school shooting.
Suddenly, it was important to me to add the flag symbols to the painting - in the hope of reminding us of our Nation's obligation to our children to keep them fed, educated, and above all, safe. For me, the gray stripes and empty stars symbolize the lack of determination on the part of our national political representative to accomplish this on behalf of our children.
About Pat Dolan
Pat Dolan has a BA in art and education and is a multi-media artist. Throughout her career as an artist, Pat taught classes in drawing, watercolor, pastel, colored pencil, color theory, pen & ink, quilting, creative stitchery, and more. She has lived in rural Pennsylvania for many years where she became well known as a realistic watercolorist focusing on antique still life arrangements, flowers, birds, and rural landscapes as her subject matter. While living in New Jersey, Pat chose the fiber medium with its variant textures to express her inner visions.
